Goth points are those points whereby it is determined how goth something is. Some gothic features are worth more goth points than others.

Goth points are not the sole possession of netgoths and may in fact by possessed by any goth, though netgoths are, by their very nature, likely to possess more of them. Some inanimate objects (e.g. gravestones) also possess goth points.

Goth points may be obtained for features such as:-

# Wearing black a lot.
# Being naturally black, purple or dark red.
# Having internal organs that are black.
# Posting to gothic newsgroups.
# Going to goth clubs.
# Living in Gothenberg.
# Dying, or almost dying. Also dyeing.
# Being in a gothic band.
# Denying being a goth.
# Going to Convergence or the Whitby Gothic Weekend.
# Being, or looking like, a bat or a spider.

Unfortunately, the deliberate process of trying to accrue goth points can easily lead to being sp00ky. This approach is therefore not recommended. It should be noted that people who have no goth points still have the potential to be goth-compatible.

is there any way of "including" a page on another page?

If so, it would be nice to do the following:

#new page : C14_galleries
#edit C14 : include C14_galleries
#edit Gallery_sites : include C14_galleries
--Sloot 17:46, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

No way that I know of to whole-page inclusion. I've been keeping all the gallery links on one page to limit the amount of navigation required to actually access the things.

--Hellsop 18:17, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

ok - then I tried something. How does this work for you?

(look at the C3 and C14 pages as well to see how it relates)

(note - I added a C3 gallery just after the reformat -- in case you hate it and roll it back)
--Sloot 18:47, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Works for me.
This was one of the most fearsome of threads, raging for months in the early 'nineties, ever-increasing in bitterness and abstraction. It involved not only alt.gothic but also crossposts with soc.bi and a few other groups. Quite a lot of anti-goth sentiment was expressed in these places, doubtless partly as a consequence of everybody's sheer frustration. It was salvaged, in the end, partly by the discovery of a mutual love of nutella.

The longest of alt.gothic's threads ever, Se7en was initially created by Erithromycin and basically consisted of a list of seven matters of immediate concern to the poster at the time.

Example:-

1. - I feel like making a list of seven things of concern to me.

2. - I'm vaguely worried that other people will find my list uninteresting.

3. - I'm going to post my list anyway! I'm not ashamed!

4. - Gosh. Some Se7en posters seem to have really interesting things to talk about. Most of the posts in the thread are pretty dull, though, so I'm sure my post will look okay.

5. - I've just been told that the average person can only think of three or four things at one time. Imagine!

6. - I like fluffy things! :D

7. - Um...

This format proved very popular with some people, who liked to read each other's day to day gossip and who enjoyed the focus on lighthearted, present-orientated discussion. Other people, however, loathed this thread with a passion, and some actually gave it as their reason for leaving alt.gothic forever.

Every now and again, a newbie would appear and express disappointment at the fact we were not discussing the films of David Fincher.

This information is out of date. It refers to the C14 Vote Process. Things will change for the C15 Vote Process.

THIS YEAR'S BALLOT
The ballot of cities to host Convergence 14 will be announced here and on alt.gothic.* newsgroups once the proposals have been submitted. See the timeline for more information.

VOTING SYSTEM
Upon final verification of this years voter database, announcements of the opening of the vote will be emailed to each validated voter.

Upon logging in during the vote period, voters will be able to log in to www.altgothic.com and place their vote.

This year's voting system is a single choice plan. Each voter will be given a single vote for the city of their choice.

WHAT IS THE EMAIL "PING"?
All eligible voters for the following Convergence voting period will receive a "ping" email to verify their email address is still valid and does not bounce. This email will originate from webmaster@altgothic.com. This is to remove the detritus from year to year of expired accounts. If you are registered to vote, you should receive a ping, you do not have to do anything with it, and do *not* reply to it. If you do not receive a ping, you need to register to obtain your vote.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE?
In order to be eligible to vote for the location of Convergence 14, you will need to be a Registered alt.gothic Convergence^(SM) Voter. If you are already registered to vote for Convergence 14, you will receive an email "ping" in the form of a copy of the Convergence 14 time-line on or around April 1, 2007 from the following email address: webmaster@altgothic.com.

If you have not attended any previous convergence using pre-registration and/or you have not previously used the Mail-In Registration method and/or your contact email address has changed since the last voting period, you will not receive a ping and you MUST use the Mail-In Registration method in order to participate in the Convergence 14 Vote.

Mail-In Registration is open begins April 1, 2007, and ends on May 5, 2007. Any Mail-in registrations received after May 5, 2007 will NOT be processed for Convergence 14. They will be processed AFTER the voting period as mail-in registrations for Convergence 15 voting.

Browse altgothic.com or consult the Convergence 14 Mail-in Registration document for full instructions on how to use Mail-In Registration.
HOW DO I REGISTER TO VOTE?
If you did not receive an email "Ping" from altgothic.com with preliminary voting instructions for registered voters within a week of April 1, 2007, then you are not in our current database and therefor not registered to vote.

You may self-register to vote for Convergence 14 by doing the following:

Send a photocopy of your government issued picture ID with the ID # or SSN blocked out along with the following information:

*Network Alias *current / permanent email address

For those updating an email address, please include your old email address.

Send this documentation to:

ONE mail-in registration per envelope only.

The information from this registration will be used for Convergence Voting purposes ONLY, and will not be used for any other purpose, nor released to any other party.
WHEN IS THE CONVERGENCE 14 VOTING PERIOD?
The voting period will begin at 0:00EST (05:00GMT)on May 5, 2007. Only registered voters will be allowed to vote, using security keys which will be emailed to them prior to the start of the actual vote.

This voting procedure is obviously not perfect. As with all aspects of Convergence, it is a work in progress and everyone involved is intent on improving the voting process, as well as all aspects of the festival as it continues to grow and gain popularity. We hope as time goes on that those of you who attend and enjoy Convergence will make an effort to work with us to continue what has been a very highly focused and productive group effort in the year plus that has followed since the Convergence six voting season.

Goth, as we all know, really has nothing to do with communities: it is Just About The Music. We are also advised that communities formed online are Not Real and that when one makes a 'friend' on Usenet THEY COULD BE A DOG YOU DONT KNOW!!1! In which case you might as well turn off your computer and go out and do something less boring instead. For those of us who'd rather talk to a dog who can type than to the average dumb human, however, there's this here page.

Where does a community start? It starts with its Members. Over the years, there have been an awful lot of us, some sticking around for over a decade, some popping in only briefly to try and sell us Rolexes or persuade us that they're 800 years old. Those people who were part of alt.gothic in the very early days are generally known as Great Old Ones and are treated with some reverence. Few of them post in our threads anymore, but quite a few still grep to see what we're saying about them.

Once a year (in the past, once every six months), a Netscrape polls alt.gothic's denizens to determine their innermost secrets. Amongst other things, this has consistently revealed that approximately two thirds of posters are resident in the USA, with significant numbers based in the UK, Canada and Australia. The difficulties of communicating in a second language probably put off many people from elsewhere, but the group has also had regulars from such far-flung places as Brazil, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, South Africa and Sweden.

The 'not real' community of alt.gothic has resulted in several marriages and long-term relationships, births, emigrations, job opportunities, band formations and book purchases. It has been there to support its members through illnesses, deaths and divorces. It has spawned many further communities which use different systems of communication. It may be quieter these days, and over the years it has attracted many doomsayers, but the evidence suggests that rumours of its demise remain greatly exaggerated.

The charter, with accordance with Ms. Lemay's vision:

>alt.gothic is a newsgroup for the discussion of the gothic subculture.
>The gothic (or goth) movement is dedicated to things mournful and
>dark. It does not refer to the historical gothic movement, i.e.
>the ravaging of asia by the visigoths.
>
>Then, below, you don't necessarily have to explain what each genre
>is:
>
>Gothic music: sometimes called "death rock", encompasses bands
>such as (bands listed in the charter)
>
>Gothic art: films, books, plays, fine arts: art that perpetuates
>a morbidity or feeling of angst. Submissions of gothic prose
>and poetry are encouraged.
>
>Social aspects of the gothic culture: clothes, clubs, etc, as well
>as gothic activities such as vampirism and haunting.

>Finally, I feel it would be especially apt were alt.gothic to be
>created on halloween. :-)

I thought about this before creating the group. Seeing what little
discussion was happening in alt.config, I decided to jump the gun in order to
create upon this relevant date.
Introduction
Shrouded in river mist, softly lit with gas lanterns, haunted by investment kings and rodeo queens - Omaha is a perfect city in which to hold our yearly Gothic gathering! Axel, Peter H. Coffin, Eilis, Siobhan, Moonglow Minnow and the cast of characters comprising the alt.gothic usenet group offer you their proposal for a Convergence in the city that care forgot.

The Plan
Breaking with the tradition of Convergences past, C15 in Omaha would be held during the end of Summer, avoiding the infamous heat and humidity of summer in the South. We are currently negotiating with venues that can accommodate us for August 8th weekend. Our plan is to provide you with three full days of opportunities to see live bands, dance to the music of an assortment of DJs, attend the Tekamah Annual Sweet Corn Festival, experience the magic of the city during planned daytime events, and meet with other Goths from around the country (and perhaps beyond!). Of course, you may choose from any or none of the above, as Omaha herself is an excellent tour guide.

The Place
Omaha exists in a state of elegant decay. The past and the present seem to overlap - the city does not easily give up its ghosts. Mysterious, romantic, and steeped in history, it welcomes such an unconventional convention as Convergence.
There is so much to do that it's impossible to include it all here.
The telecommunications infrastructures of Omaha are a must-see. Due to the high water table, there are no underground burials - rows upon rows of whitewashed cables form above ground webs, true cities to house the geeky. The Westgate Gallery is a purple and black mansion that contains a collection of paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and books dedicated to portraying Death as a sorrowful, compassionate entity. You can visit a real ceremony; take daytime or evening walking tours focusing on any subject you can imagine (college baseball, crumbling factories, nuclear powered hospitals, Warren Buffett, you name it!); tour Antebellum meat packing plants, Civil War fields, primordial grassland, and gracious turn-of-the-century skyscrapers; or just sit on a wrought-iron balcony or in a lush sports bar, sipping a cool drink and watching the sun set. Of course, there are also many fine museums, two lovely public parks, an award-winning, record-setting zoo, steamboat rides and horse-drawn carriages.
The selection of Goth-friendly stores in Omaha has never been better. There's exquisite silver jewellery at Kitty's Jewelry, fancy clothing for men and women at Kambriel, CDs at Homer's, and ooo-la-lingerie at Doctor Johns. Beef and other barbecue accessories are available in a variety found no place else, due to the city's passion for dramatic celebration. Antiques stores abound both inside and out of Council Bluffs, filled with glass inkwells, ebony walking sticks, silk parasols - there's even a shop specializing in gas pump
antiques, where you can find that Correct Measure light arm you've been wanting.

The People
Here's some information about your prospective C15 organizers:

Party Secretary Axel
Is originally from Germany. He helped organize the first Francophone Convergence, where he learned all about what NOT to do! He promises to apply this experience (plus all he's learned from hosting pig
roasts, CMAfA gigspoetry readings, etc.) to making C15 in Omaha an unforgettable extravaganza.
Corn Commodore Peter H. Coffin
has migrated from Boston. He runs the Hades Data Servicess, so you can be assured that at least one of his websites will carry an Omahan Convergence website. Also, he has promised to offer both soundbites from C15 bands and online sale of C15 tickets on the alt.gothic website, should we win your votes. He has the saintly patience, iron will, and lack of sanity required to pull off getting Goths to a Corn Festival, attend club events, and a giant net.goth gathering.

Team Captain Eilis
Eilis is a teachergoth, figure skater, likes mojitos, coordinates Goths on Ice. She chaired the C9 committee and is on the C15 Long Beach bid committee. She will be organising the sports related activities in the bid.

Cow Tipping Chief Ian
Ian will be organising a Gothic Cow Tipping extravaganza. Details to follow. As cow tipping is a sport, Ian will be under Eilis

Lord High Executioner Siobhan
Siobhan will be killing Axel if this bid wins.
We plan to make this the highlight of the Sunday night festivities.

Dr. Moonglow Minnow
Maeve will be running Cheesecake Lab. She requires many subjects to test her experiments on.

Dreaded Dragon Marisa
Marisa has been vending at Convergence for several years. She will be coordinating the vendors aspect of the bid.

Jola
Jola will be coordinating the fashion show component.

Fross
DJ coordinator and after party organizer.

Wookie
Taking care of all your rum related needs.

TenshiKurai9
Official fan girl.

alt.gothic
The alt.gothic usenet group is home to net celebrities like erith (Erith Romycin) and Dag (Dag). Our many-talented list members have responded to the nomination of Omaha with great enthusiasm, and will be a dedicated, efficient team for C15.

Bands
Local bands you may expect to see during Omaha's Convergence would include Captain Matt's Armada, featuring Axel (where Trevor Writes All The Songs and does all the work), The Gaunts, and The V-Twins. Our scene is growing in leaps and bounds, and these three bands have contributed greatly to that growth.

Name Dropping
Name dropping for your vote! - some people who very well may be involved should Convergence come to this beloved city are usenet celebs Sexbat and Tom Truscott. Of course, if you're in their town, you can also just catch them walking down the street on their way home from the liquor store... :}

The Boring Facts!
Travel to and staying in Omaha is easy and inexpensive. Most major airlines (including Southwest) fly into our airport, and we're accessible from both coasts and everywhere in between by Amtrak and Greyhound. Our city has a lot of visitors' accommodations per capita compared to other city's in America, so we'll get some hotel
deals together for you. Due to the popularity of Omaha as a travel destination, hotels are nearly all within driving distance or a quick taxi/streetcar ride away from venues, clubs, shopping, and other places of interest.
Summer turns Omaha into an Eden of corn, corn flowers, and gorgeous weather. Expect the temperature to be about 18 to 30 degrees C, with the good possibility of a little rain.
At the writing of this proposal, the tattooing and piercing age is 18, and you must also be 21 to enter a bar. However, you must be 21 or over to purchase alcoholic beverages or enter an establishment offering gambling or gambling machines. People of drinking age may not carry and consume drinks (in non-glass
containers) in the street. "Bar time" is set by government regulations, and many bars are open until 1:00am. After that, it's room parties.

Divergence was a one evening event that took place during the same weekend as Convergence IV. It was started by Lady Greycat and Sheila Marie in August of 1998. Both women were chatting about missing another Convergence when the idea of being in an mIRC chat while everyone else, it seemed, was at the actual event, was an event in and of itself. It was Christened "Divergence" due to the fact that people in the chat would be separated. Lady Greycat made the official announcement on August 22, 1998 on alt.gothic and a web-page was created shortly after. Sadly, only the Google record of the announcement is all that is left of this momentous occasion.

Divergence II was set to run again when it was discovered that Love and Rockets would be doing a live net-cast from the House Of Blues the same weekend Convergence V was to take place. This brought about the first ever band performance at Divergence. A bot was set up on the channel and people popped in and out throughout the weekend of Convergence V. No official log was created for this event, and the only record of it is through the Google groups archive.

There was talk of doing it again for Convergence VII, but didn't get much beyond a mere mention.

The Divergence name was hi-jacked during Convergence IX for a pre-Convergence event designed to compete with the real deal. It is believed that the organizer of this Divergence was completely unaware of the prior Divergence events. She was certainly unaware of how to run an event or pay a band.

Convergence 16 Park City, Utah Bid
For your kind consideration, your friends from Utah invite you to a one-of-a-kind experience in the finest spot in the Rocky Mountains: Park City, Utah!

Convergence 16: Park City is slated for August 13-16, 2010.

(PS: I'll be adding photos and links when I'm not getting ready for my last night DJing, so please check back in a day or 2.)

Your Mountain Guides
The C16 Utah Committee is led by Madelyn Boudreaux and Paul " Wookie" Lohrenz. Both have been in the goth scene for ages, and you've met them or at least seen one or both of them at C5, C6, C7, C9, C10, C12, and C14. Madelyn has run the roll call since C5, and is on the C15 committee as Volunteer Coordinator.

Heading up the music portion is Jeremiah " Madmiah" Stratton. Miah has been at C7, C13, and C14, and has headed the band committee for Salt Lake's Dark Arts festival for several years.

Handling vending is Skylar Stratton, who has also worked on the Dark Arts Festival for many years and attended C7, C13, and C14.

Donna Rhodes of Arsenic Fashions will be handling the Fashion Show. She attended C7 and C13, and has run the Dark Arts Festival and other fashion shows for several years.

Several other members of SLC's net.goth / Convergence attending population have agreed to handle various duties. We will likely follow the recent trends and involve long-time Convergence attendees and planners from elsewhere as needed.

Like Long Beach and Tampa before, our focus will be on the people -- YOU -- who make Convergence what it is. A "gothapalooza" this will not be! You'll be coming here to revel in the company of your net.goth friends (including the ones you don't know yet) and to enjoy exploring a place many only see once a year on the Independent Film Channel.

Theme
Ghosts of the Old West. Park City has cred as a former Ghost Town, and our theme will mirror the gritty Old West Victorian era: saloons and dance halls, with a touch of steam punk in the fashion of Wild Wild West.

Location
Park City grew up as a Silver Mining town in the days of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but by the Great Depression, it had fallen into official "Ghost Town" status. Until the 1980s, only a handful of people called in home. Until one Mr. Robert Redford, knowing a good thing when he sees it, decided it would be the right place to make his stand as only the Sundance Kid could: by starting an international independent film festival. These days, the festival draws the likes of Paris and her latest BFF, and is anything but small, but the independent spirit pervades.

Park City itself has stayed true to its roots in many ways, and has preserved its old Main street beautifully. The shops themselves no longer sell flour or spurs, but an endless supply of alpine gear, art, photography, and clothing from fancy to just plain weird. Window shopping is great fun here, although we will be the first to admit that you're not going to be shopping for Lip Service stuff. However, if a pair of freak-friendly cowboy boots or a movie-starlet's parka in on your list, you just might find it here!

Weather
Why swelter in the lowlands when you can enjoy highs in the low 80s during the days and lows in the cool 40s at night, little humidity, and almost guaranteed clear skies?

Hotel
Park City's Treasure Mountain Inn, at the top of Main Street, offers gorgeous views at excellent prices. They've quoted us a rate of $129/night for double-occupancy, with several additional room styles, sleeping up to 5, available. Rooms are unlike the usual hotel rooms, but are gorgeously appointed suites, each with a full dine-in kitchenette including full-size stove and fridge, and a seating area. Most rooms overlook the courtyard and have a balcony; others overlook Main Street.

The hotel is quite small and has maximum occupancy of about 149, so book early if you want to stay there. Luckily, there are many options for overflow, if needed, from two Marriott's in close vicinity to condos, resorts, and several other hotels in EASY walking distance.

Official day-time events will occur here as well, and it is a mere 5 minutes' walk from several potential venues for evening events, including the World Famous Harry Os.

Because of the small size of the hotel, we are in talks about potentially booking the entire place -- always a boon for our crowd. The hotel hosts Slamdance and MTV as well as many other freak-friendly events, and are well suited to our eclecticism. If we can book out the entire hotel, we are assured latre-night use of the courtyard and, yes, the hot tub! This depends on our ability to book all rooms

Thursday
Arriving early? We'll enjoy a low-key evening event at a Park City lounge. Or, if you prefer to stay in Salt Lake for the night, we'll hook you up with our long-running Goth night at SLC's own Area 51.

Events
Of course, every Convergence has some things in common: vendors, meals, and the evening events. Ours will be no different.

Friday
Meet and Greet / Sign In -- the traditional opening event. Sign in, get your laminates, and enjoy the scenery -- gorgeous goths and the incredible mountain views!
Death Rock Mountain High -- Rip up your stockings and spike the mohawk for a little bit of Utah blasphemy. DJs round out the night, keeping it dark, darker, and darkest.

Saturday
Dry Goods Market -- One thing you can't do much of in the mountains of Utah is shop for cool goth stuff. But that's okay; we bring it to you!
Daytime Excursions -- Take a trip over the mountains to Park City, or head down into Salt Lake City. Plan your own early group dinner, or take a ride on the zip line, alpine slides, or aerial tram. Head up a trail for some amazing wildflower photography. You can even take a horseback ride.
Fashion Show -- Of course! See the beautiful designs against an equally beautiful setting.
Big Gothic Rock Tent Revival -- Tonight's the night for corsets and nice boots. We'lll remind you why you fell in love with the dark in the first pace, and the DJs will keep you dancing all night long.

Sunday
Dry Goods Market -- A day of rest? No way. Finish your shopping!
Daytime Excursions -- If you didn't go see the wildflowers yesterday, seriously -- grab the nearest hot model/photographer and a camera, and go walk around. Or check out one of the other options for things to do on your summer vacation.
The Silver King Underground -- Break out the goggles and the New Rocks! It's industrial night. (Want a tie-in? Industrial Worker of the World, Joe Hill, worked in Park City's Silver King Mine at the time he accused.) Crunchy tunes and DJs with fake German-sounding names get you ready to welcome our benevolent robot masters!

Monday
So Long, Farewell...
Another year wrapped up, another hangover from hell, and another 3000 photos to post. Join us for a farewell breakfast, get your last lungful of alpine air, and then make your way back down to the airport.

Unofficial Events and Excursions
Hop on the Park City Town Ski Lift (yes, it runs in the summer, too!) and take a leisurely ride to the Park City Mountain Resort which, in the summer features all manner of fun. From Ziplines to alpine slides to horseback rides, you can go as fast or as slow as you desire! Take the larger ski lift for an aerial tour of the mountain, or hop off at one of the stops to hike through meadows of the most beautiful wild flowers you will ever encounter. Don't forget your favorite model and/or photographer.

Goths On Ice -- For those wishing to take to the ice, Park City features its own ice arena, located at the intersection of SR 248 and Hwy 40.

CorpGoth dinner -- Park City features scores of dining options, most of them right on Main Street, many with banquet facilities. Group dining information and comparisons of banquet size and prices can be found here: http://www.parkcityinfo.com/static/index.cfm?contentID=519

Goths on the Greens -- Wookie has recently taken up golfing, and wants to get a group to hit the greens. Utilikilts optional but highly recommended!

Wondering about the Mormons? We do, too. Head down to Salt Lake City for a tour of the Temple. (Just PLEASE observe their rules about smoking, and dress nicely. They can handle goths, but visiting the Temple is similar to visiting any house of worship.) We may plan a Salt Lake guide for some of the more interesting sites -- how about a VW-sized sphinx with Joseph Smith's head? -- if there is enough interest.

How about a train ride through the mountains? Your best bet for an easy ride through stunning scenery. There are several offerings from the Heber Valley Rail Road, including an option for river rafting with an experienced guide.

There's plenty to do during the day, but don't over-do it; the mountain air will tire you out faster than you realize. Same some energy for the evening events!

Getting Here
Salt Lake International Airport is home to 17 airlines and more than 900 flights. Average flight times are 2 hours from most West Coast cities, 3 hours from the midwest, and 5 hours from the East Coast.

Once you're on the ground, Park City is a 35 minute drive through some of America's most beautiful canyons. 15 shuttle companies offer round-the-clock SLC-to-Park City service, ranging in price.

Getting Around in PC:
Once you're here, getting around town is equally convenient by foot or the town's free transit system.

From 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. every day, buses will take you just about anywhere you need to go in Park City, for free!

Daily from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Main Street Trolley connects the Old Town Transit Center and Main Street.

Park City also has a number of taxi services.

If you plan to hit the Park City Mountain Resort for a day of Alpine Slide, Ziplines, or walks, take the Park City Town Lift. Yes, Park City
has its own municipal ski lift, and in the summer, it takes you right to the best things in town.

Rental cars
Due to the size of Park City, rental cars should not be necessary, and the hotel discourages them. http://www.parkcity.org/citydepartments/parking/parkinginparkcity/overnightparking.html

F.A.Q.
Q. Why is it "Utah" and not "Salt Lake City"?
A. Although the committee is located in SLC, and you'll go through it to get to C16, in fact, the event itself will take place entirely in Park City. Therefore, it's not really C16 SLC. Don't get us wrong; we love Salt Lake City! It's a great city. We just thought we'd try something different, and Park City's unique offerings will allow us to do more and make the event really special.

Q. How do we get from the airport to Park City?
A. Ground transportation from SLC International Airport to Park City runs regularly, for prices as low as $20/person. Rental cars are also available. Depending on the need, we may set up some type a ride-share process of some type to help you get from the airport to PC as cheaply as possible.

Q. Isn't Park City expensive?
A. Park City is a ski town, meaning they make almost all their money in the winter. Summer finds local venues dropping their prices radically just to keep something happening.

Q. What will the weather be like?
A. Well, it's hard to predict... but average temperatures in Park City in the summer are awesome. The daily average maximum temperature in August is 78F, and the daily average low is 48, according to Wikipedia.

Q. Isn't Utah a weird place for goths?
A. Park City hosts Sundance. We are far from the weirdest people they will ever see!

Q. Blah blah blah ALCOHOL?
A. Yes, you can drink in Utah. Park City has two liquor stores which are open every day but Sundays. One is a few yards from Treasure Mountain Inn; the other is HUGE and is a ways out but not any farther than liquor stores usually are from the hotel, and there are busses and other options to get there. Furthermore, at this altitude, you will notice that you get drunk faster than you may be used to.

Q. What about Private Clubs?
A. The Private Club rule is often misunderstood. It works basically like paying a cover at the door in most cases, so when you pay for a ticket to a show, that includes the temporary membership. In other cases, one person with a membership can 'sponsor' other people. For our venues, we will either have enough membership holders at the event to sponsor every attendee, or we will have worked out the necessary membership requirements ahead of time. There is also some chance that the "private club" requirement will be lifted by 2010.

Q. Same question, but about coffee?
A. Trust us; we have coffee. Park City is especially coffee friendly.

Q. How will the altitude (7,000 feet) affect me?
A. Everyone is different, although staying hydrated helps a lot. Don't forget: Utah is a high desert, and you will need lots of water while you're here. Some people get headaches from the altitude, and alcohol will almost certainly hit you harder than it does closer to sea level, so if you drink, do so slower than you're used to. Common annoying but non-threatening symptoms include a headache combined with one or more of the following: Lack of appetite, nausea, or vomiting, Fatigue or weakness, Dizziness or light-headedness, Insomnia, Pins and needles, Shortness of breath upon exertion, Persistent rapid pulse, Drowsiness, General malaise, or swelling of hands, feet, and face.

Symptoms that may indicate life-threatening altitude sickness include a persistent dry cough, fever, and shortness of breath even when resting, or a headache that does not respond to analgesics, unsteady gait, increased vomiting, and gradual loss of consciousness. These symptoms typically occur at altitudes over 10,000 feet, so you'll be considerably lower than that and not likely to be at risk.

Q. Won't the Mormons have a problem with us looking freaky?
A. Maybe, maybe not. They're not really as straight-laced as you might think -- not any more than norms anywhere. But you actually probably won't be around them much. Park City is used to hosting people from around the world. If they can handle Paris and her crew, we won't phase them. And, as always, you get out what you put in: be nice, and most people will be nice right back. Be an ass, and you just make it harder for those of us who live here.

Q. Swimming pool, hot tub?
A. If we can book the entire hotel, we will have all-night access to the courtyard hot tub.

Q. After hours?
Again, if we can book the hotel out completely, we will have access to the courtyard at night. Otherwise, we have options for after-hours permits at one of the local venues.

Q. Will the events be kid-friendly?
A. Yes and no. As is often the case with Convergence evening events, they will most likely be 21+ only. However, the day-time activities are extremely family-friendly and great fun for everyone. We will have someone in charge of finding a babysitting service if needed.

Q. I hate ______ kind of music, which you have on _____ night. What do I do?
A. By breaking the music out like this, we are trying to give you a night to hang out with friends or relax AND a night to dance your butts off. There will be plenty of space to hang out with your friends, or enjoy a nice late-night dinner.

This page is for the C14 committee to write a postmortem of their experience.

C14 Postmortem
It's over... done... finished... the shark has been jumped (sort of...) and everyone has gone home! Now that we've had few days to relax and get back into the grind of normal life, it's time to reflect on everything that happened, both good and bad, in the whole process of organizing Convergence 14.

This page has been created for the purpose of documenting both the good and bad that we dealt with in putting together C14. The idea behind this is to create a page where future Convergence committees can look to see what worked well for us, as well as what didn't work so well. This should help them to avoid any problems that we came across, and help to create progressively better and better gatherings in the years to come!
Theme
There was beer involved. Huge surprise, that.

In the wake of the "wrong direction" we (and others) felt Cx had taken with C11, 12 & 13, it was put forth that "Convergence has jumped the shark." Xany then suggested we do a snarky bid with that as the theme. Embellishing upon this, TheOneBob offered to don the alter ego of TheOneFonz and perform the jump. [Editor's Note: Better him than me, photographic proof to follow].

In the main, this all fit well as a "back to basics" / Kegger Contingent-style bid, eschewing the Gothapalooza aspect that had tainted the previous couple of iterations.
Hotel - Hyatt Regency Downtown Tampa

The Hyatt was the main storage facility for all the freaks for the weekend, as well as the venue for Saturday night's events. Their staff was outstanding (this point simply cannot be emphasized enough from a planning and execution standpoint); guest relations issues, primarily due to elevator maintenance and occasional room-key demagnetization being met with less-than-perfect customer service were present, but seem to be of the "very minor" sort. Despite sharing space with a very large professional body-building competition, there were no real issues from the organizational side of things that I could see.

Whether I needed to clear up a misunderstanding about our space needs or just had to have an extra extension cord, the staff at the Hyatt, after going out of their way to give me their business cards, contact info, and locations where I could find them if need be, their answer to pretty much every request made of them was invariably, "Sure, give me about five minutes." This, more than anything else, is something future committees should strive for - an excellent working relationship with the hotel and venue, especially when that staff is competent and professional throughout. Anecdotal evidence suggests that even potential trouble spots were met with good-natured equanimity on the part of the Hyatt's staff - a bottle of absinthe was taken out to the pool area, and rather than insist it be gotten rid of, the security agent came back with a handful of plastic cups, so that Cx-style shenanigans could continue while still complying with the hotel's policy.

Venue - The Cuban Club
Friday night: fashion show / Voltaire concert / Skarey-oke / DJs

Had undergone extensive renovations in the year leading up to C14, and wasn't completely finished. Easygoing to work with, but not on a par with the Hyatt or Convention Center in terms of professionalism or execution. Some details were lost in translation or difficult to get answered, or left until the last moment. When dealing with a smaller, private venue as opposed to a large, corporate entity, organizers need to be more pro-active and may need to verge on "nagging" to make sure everything that is supposed to happen does so.

Venue - Tampa Convention Center
Saturday Night: Bands & DJs

This was a relatively late venue selection due to persistent turmoil and unresponsiveness from other, more freak-friendly options that ultimately didn't pan out, and as a consequence, somewhat expensive and inflexible. Employed a rather weird ticketing system for bar service (I wasn't drinking, so someone who was will have to speak to how this worked in execution), as well as had an eleventh-hour (but laughably low - $500 per bar) sales guarantee that they had to present to us.

Professional to deal with, though obviously accustomed to much larger and more organized/structured events than Cx. Didn't go out of the way to make us feel like amateurs, but I sure did merely by comparison. This differs from the "handshake deal" feel of working with the Hyatt and Cuban Club, but is understandable, as they are a large municipal facility.

In retrospect, having both Saturday and Sunday at the Hyatt might not have been a bad idea, contractual obligations notwithstanding, but that carried too strong a whiff of Goth*Cons modus operandi for us to pursue, even without the Convention Center's binding contract.

Vendors
Volunteers
We had a transition occur in the Volunteer Coordinator (VC) position about two months prior to the gathering. Anastasia found that she would not be able to attend C14, so I (Spud) stepped up from being her assistant to take over the role of VC. Having managed both security and volunteer staffs at large conventions and gatherings in the past, I thought I could take this on with little worry. That didn't prove to be the case, and while (hopefully) everything appeared to most attendees to have gone smoothly, there were definitely some things that could have been done better in managing the volunteer staff!

Assistant Volunteer Coordinator
In taking over the role of VC, my role as the Assistant was no longer filled. This is something I definitely regret, as there are times where I needed to be in two places at once, or simply was too overwhelmed with other issues and couldn't get timely messages sent out to people. The extra assistance can make all the difference in the world when it comes to keeping everyone "in the loop" and stress levels to a minimum. I definitely suggest that anyone acting as VC for a future Convergence should make certain that they have an Assistant Volunteer Coordinator as well.

Getting the Volunteers on-board
The call for volunteers really only went out about a month before the C14 event was scheduled to begin. In hindsight, we should have started posting out calls for volunteers at least three months in advance. This would have given a lot more time to make sure that we had enough volunteers to work with us, and allowed for more time to work up appropriate schedules for all of the volunteer staff. We posted out to a.g. and the convergence LJ communities. I think these were the best and most appropriate forums for this, as it kept most everything internal and within the a.g. family.

Know how many Volunteers you need!
Once our schedule for C14 events was really set in stone, I began to realize that I had nowhere near enough volunteers to be able to support all the jobs we needed them to assist with. We did manage to keep most everything covered well in the end, though some people ended up working for several hours more through the weekend than I would have preferred. The following outline is what we found to have worked well in figuring out how many volunteers are needed:

The following should be figured as a minimum of two (2) volunteers per three hour shift
* Badge pickup
* Badge Purchase and Sponsored Event purchases
* Vendor sign-in and Badge Pickup
* Convergence Merchandise sales

As you can see, that comes to eight (8) people covering four separate tables for only three hours. Our Meet-and-Greet ran from 12pm to 6pm on Friday, and I didn't have sixteen (16) people to cover six hours of time. A portion of the volunteer staff had not even arrived at the hotel by that point. Luckily, committee members and staff joined in to assist, and everything worked out pretty well.

The point to consider here is that with just the Meet and Greet, we could easily have used sixteen volunteers for three hours each. Volunteers are there because they want to help, but they also want to be able to enjoy the weekend that they paid to attend.

The location of Convergence 2 was announced. No vote or other discussion took place.

The first announcement was by retardboy for it to be in Toronto, ON in April, 1996, however he couldn't organise a piss up in a bar so if it had not been for Cusraque that could have been it for Convergence.
Fortunately, Cusraque asked / announced his intent to hold another Convergence - originally intended to be Convergence III in August 1996 and the consensus on the group was that this was a good thing.

The consensus amongst the Toronto net.goths ( Siani Evans, Yvonne McLoughlin to name but two) on the newsgroups was that the Toronto plan wasn't going to happen - more by their silence than active statements.

Net result - Convergence 2 went to Cusraque in Boston by fiat.
as
It will B a Logistical Nightmare,
Parading thru Very Old Burial Grounds,

A Wonderful Vision,
&
Participants will have 2 Buy them In Advance.
at
a Very Brave Restaurant{?}...

This Also Presents a Problem,
in that I have No Idea How Many Creatures
will
B Needing Feeding,
How much Cash Each Creature can Spend,
If a Suitable Venue Exists,
or If we need Rent a Function Room..{?!}

Umm,
Help?

<--oOo-->
_This May B Expanded_:

that
2 have _Two_ Nights of Bands,
on the Saturday & Sunday...

This twice annual gathering of gothy types in the English seaside town of Whitby is not a netgoth event as such, but regularly has a good number of netgoths in attendance, and they're generally welcoming to newbies and lurkers. The event is officially focused around two to three band nights in the clifftop Spa Pavillion, but not everyone bothers to go to this. Other focal points for activity include pubs The Elsinore, The Resolution and The Little Angel, the graveyard at St Mary's Church, and the famous ruined Abbey (from out of Dracula). Plus, at any given time, you'll find a fair number of us just hanging around on street corners.

Also happening at Whitby is the Bizarre Bazaar, the biggest gothic shopping opportunity of any event. This includes a bring and buy stall for those with less cash to spend. Furthermore, all the charity shops in local towns save up their gothy stuff for six months to bring it out at WGW events, and the town has acquired several gothy shops which thrive on that twice-annual custom and on the town's goth-friendly reputation.

Whitby is a very safe place to be a goth, no matter how outrageously one prefers to dress. The locals are very welcoming, though many refuse to believe that we also dress like this at home. Parties of little old ladies have been known to visit from nearby towns to ogle young men in short skirts.

There are usually several netgoth parties at Whitby, and netgoths often get together to hold a beach party. There used to be a formal netgoth meal, organised by GothPat, but this has not happened for several years. More recently, there has been a small-scale netgoth pot luck meal.

The Next Event
The next Whitby Gothic Weekend will be happening between the 29th of October and 3rd of November. The following netgoths are expected to attend:-

Aidan Skinner, Donald Says, EdwardS, Elder, Erithromycin, Jennie Kermode, Potatojunkie, Siani, Wraithlady
Christian Death were touring with Switchblade Symphony at the time, and were booked by Cusraque so that they could arrange to have the latter perform as headliners. Always one of the group's more provocative posters, Erithromycin (known as 'Erith' for short) is best known as the creator of Se7en, a feat which earned him the outright hatred of some former regulars. He is a Glasgoth and regularly attends the Whitby Gothic Weekend; he has also been to a Convergence.

ERITH FACTS

# Erith has had snail mail addressed to him as 'Mr. Romycin'.
# Erith is sometimes refered to as 'Urethromycin' because at a party at the Whitby Gothic Weekend of April 2008 he inserted a twenty pound note into his urethra. He kept the money as he had won the bet and spent it on food and drink for a subsequent net.goth party.
# Erith is not a member of the net.goth.INQUISITION but he does dig their cool uniforms.
# Erith is an expert. It says so right here.
# Erith is notably useless at determining if people are flirting with him.
# Erith shares a flat with siani in Glasgow.
# Erith is alt.gothic's resident SCIENTIFIC FACTOLOGIST, much as Dag is the newsgroup's resident MATHEMOLOGISER
# Erith drinks tea.
# Erith is 74% Wood Fibre. The other 26% has been variously identified as 'vitriol', 'jesus', 'tea' and other things that seemed funny at the time.
# Erith keeps getting stuck in Edit Wars with Godot, usually involving redirect pages.
# Erith is the original designer of the agLET system.

Properly written, Cusraque's name is enclosed in curvy brackets, but unfortunately they screw up Wiki software.

Cusraque has a splendid hat with big feathers in it.

During Cusraque's heyday, newbies often asked petulantly "Why is he allowed to post like that when we're not?", referring to a distinctive poetic style which made use of the aforementioned curvy brackets and a lot of careful spacing. The answer was that Cusraque had already won the admiration of pretty much everyone in alt.gothic, plus he used his style intelligently to produce interesting results. He was a Special Case.

Convergence 2
Cusraque put on Convergence 2 in Boston all on his own.
It was a success and consequently allowed The North American net.goth Gathering from a one time event to the annual extravaganza we all know and love.

alt.gothic FAQ v4.0.0.1beta

The first rule of alt.gothic FAQ is "Do Not Question The Version Number"
The second rule of alt.gothic FAQ is "No Movie References"

About This FAQ
This FAQ seems incomplete! Is anyone working on updating the FAQ?
kest is.
What about questions that aren't in this FAQ?
*First - Look in an older FAQ. [link goes here]
*Second - Search Google Groups
*Third - Ask.
Can I help write the FAQ?
Yes.
About Goth
What is goth?
*A post-punk movement.
*An aesthetic
*A musical genre
*A fashion style
*A philosophy
*'The whole Goth thing for me is a state of mind. An admittance that you're not the same as the people who work in Barclays Bank and you'll never really subscribe to the idea that you'll do a day job and come home to watch Big Brother.' - Lee Chaos
*'To me, at least, the goth isn't a lifestyle, or a wardrobe or even identity. It simply *is*, and there's not a darned thing I can do change it. The only difference between me now and me at age nine is that now I buy my own clothes, so things just happen to end up being bought in black instead of other colors. It just turns out that way.' - Peter H. Coffin
*"It's a state of mind. And was invented by Lord Byron. On absinthe." - David Gerard
*I don't care as long as there's a really cute one sitting on my face.
Is X goth?
It might be, but there are enough definitions that you'll be wrong.
A list of things that are GAF
Is emo goth?
*No. There are some stylistic similarities, but the two are distinct.
*Emo could be argued as a successor to goth, but history and common sense say otherwise.
What is emo?
*"Goth minus the fucking"
What kinds of goths are there?
For a fairly small subculture, goth subdivides many ways. Here is an incomplete list:
*mopeygoth
*perkygoth
*cybergoth
*victorian goth

N.B. This list is intentionally incomplete. Any attempt to definitively list all subdivisions is doomed to failure.
About alt.gothic
What is a net.goth?
net.goth n. One (goth) who, having access to usenet, both posts to alt.gothic and wants to be known as a 'net.goth'.

While today many people would like to spread the term to include all goths that hang out on the internet, the first use of the term with any serious intention was as a means for the denizens of alt.gothic to identify each other IRL, going hand in hand with the first t-shirts, stickers, etc. Amusingly, some amount of consideration was put into whether 'cybergoth' would be a better term - cybergoth now means something completely and entirely different. ("Round here CyberGoth would be mistaken for CyberPunk. CyberPunks are anorak-wearing-startrek-watching-mud-playing-no-lifers. MHO, net.goth would be more 'obscure' (which is good)" - The Grim Reaper, 1993) See above under 'types of goths' for more information about the current usage of 'cybergoth'.
What is alt.gothic?
Alt.gothic is a newsgroup devoted to discussion of various aspects of the so-called ≥gothic≤ subculture and its people. The vast majority of the discussion that goes on isn't "gothic" per se, but deals with death and weirdness--or anything of interest to us. We're a tight-knit group, but newcomers are always welcome as long as they follow a few guidelines as explained in this FAQ.
How do I post to alt.gothic?
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.gothic/topics?hl=en
Do you bite?
*Yes, we do bite, and we like it best if you enjoy it
<!-- without this BR the A above and the A below get mixed up together in the same box--><BR>
It disrupts the natural order of conversation, and it causes crabs.
Why can't I top-post?
It's a SCIENTIFIC FACT.
Crabs? That doesn't seem...
Why are people flaming/ignoring me?
They felt like it.
Why are people insulting me for no good reason?
They're not. Someone at some point will have, probably extremely politely, explained to you what you are doing wrong and you didn't listen. Go look for it
Why is Peter H. Coffin being bitchy and petulant towards me?
Because he can. Deal.

Why is Peter Constantine celebrating and encouraging those who break social conventions and objecting to those who proclaim their existence?
'Cos that's what he does. It's a social convention built up over time.
Ironic, innit?

Also, although he likes to deny it in public he is part of the 'we' on behalf of whom some claim to be posting. He lurks in e-mail, doncha know *wink*

Do you have any other advice for me then?
Trim your posts. Attribute correctly. Lurk. Introduce yourself at some point, it seems to be popular. Buckle up. Wear nice boots.
How can I identify a net.goth?
You might find them at various net.goth friendly events, such as Convergence, Whitby Gothic Weekend, or Wave Gotik Treffen. They might be wearing a net.goth logo, but then again they might not.
Where can I get a net.goth logo?
There are several different net.goth logos. It seems like currently the best place to download them is from here: http://www.vamp.org/Gothic/Images/misc-image.html These images (should be) public domain but non-subscribers are discouraged from using them.
About ...Other Stuff
How do I know if I have a beautiful heart?
Rub the magic Albatross, of course.
Is it true that ejaculation diminishes one's power?
Tell me about Poppy Z. Brite's nipples...
Could a 20 pound note be inserted into erithromycin's urethra?
There is evidence to this effect, yes.
