The Wheel of Justice was created by [[Potatojunkie]] (with thanks to a certain Vic and Bob) in response to concerns that there was insufficient justice available at the [[Whitby Gothic Weekend]]. It has been used in the Little Angel, in the Resolution and outside on Flowergate to determine the appropriate punishment for persons convicted by [[Goth Court]] of inappropriate behaviour. After its hair has been combed, the wheel is spun, stopping at a section which reveals the appropriate punishment. The offender then has to carry out the sentence.

It has been rumoured that when the Wheel of Justice stops appearing in Whitby it will be replaced by a [[Wheel of Pies]].

It has been alleged that the Wheel of Justice stops in some places more often than in others. Its carers deny this allegation and point out that it has a spoon sellotaped to the back to help with balance.

Jennie Kermode: Several years' worth of updates!

One of the hallowed traditions of [[alt.gothic]] is the Netscrape. Traditionally this was held in September, to catch the influx of clueless newbies who had just got net access at university. Later it came to be held once every six months, as that was the only way to keep up.

Throughout most of its lifetime on alt.gothic there was a designated Keeper of the Netscrape. The first of these Keepers was Oddlystrange. In later years the Netscrape came to be looked after on a rather anarchic basis, with regulars being encouraged to post one when they felt like it. This system led to several disputes when competing versions were published simultaneously, and when various people said that other people's Netscrapes were stupid, so it was eventually abandoned. The last Keeper of the Netscrape was [[Jennie Kermode]]. After the Age of the Keepers, versions of the Netscrape continued to circulate in netgoth communities elsewhere.

The Netscrape is essentially a list of questions for alt.gothic posters to answer. One doesn't need to be established to do so - people are encouraged to use it to delurk. Even when Netscrapes are standardised, questions vary between each edition, though some things (like name, age, and duration of posting habit) remain constant. There are usually questions about personal identity, relationships, internet use, occupation, hobbies and [[Alt.gothic Controversies]]. It has been rumoured that the information gathered in the Netscrape is recorded and used by the C*b*l for its own nefarious purposes. Nevertheless, most regulars were keen to participate.

Whitby Gothic Weekend

This twice annual gathering of gothy types in the English seaside town of Whitby is not a netgoth event as such, but regularly has a good number of netgoths in attendance, and they're generally welcoming to newbies and lurkers. The event is officially focused around two to three band nights in the clifftop Spa Pavillion, but not everyone bothers to go to this. Other focal points for activity include pubs The Elsinore, The Resolution and The Little Angel, the graveyard at St Mary's Church, and the famous ruined Abbey (from out of ''Dracula''). Plus, at any given time, you'll find a fair number of us just hanging around on street corners.

Also happening at Whitby is the Bizarre Bazaar, the biggest gothic shopping opportunity of any event. This includes a bring and buy stall for those with less cash to spend. Furthermore, all the charity shops in local towns save up their gothy stuff for six months to bring it out at WGW events, and the town has acquired several gothy shops which thrive on that twice-annual custom and on the town's goth-friendly reputation.

Whitby is a very safe place to be a goth, no matter how outrageously one prefers to dress. The locals are very welcoming, though many refuse to believe that we also dress like this at home. Parties of little old ladies have been known to visit from nearby towns to ogle young men in short skirts.

There are usually several netgoth parties at Whitby, and netgoths often get together to hold a beach party. There used to be a formal netgoth meal, organised by GothPat, but this has not happened for several years. More recently,there has been a small-scale netgoth pot luck meal.

Often things are mistakenly classed as goth or gothic when they are in fact merely sp00ky. Often goths consider sp00ky kids to be cute, but not in that way. Occasionally sp00ky kids grow up and metamorphose into real goths. This is believed to occur when they accumulate so much pretension that it forms a sort of coccoon whih prevents them from having any social life, at which point, if they possess the [[goth gene]], the natural processes of gothification occur.

Goth points are those points whereby it is determined how goth something is. Some gothic features are worth more goth points than others.

Goth points are not the sole possession of netgoths and may in fact by possessed by any goth, though netgoths are, by their very nature, likely to possess more of them. Some inanimate objects (e.g. gravestones) also possess goth points.

Goth points may be obtained for features such as:-

# Wearing black a lot.
# Being naturally black, purple or dark red.
# Having internal organs that are black.
# Posting to gothic newsgroups.
# Going to goth clubs.
# Living in Gothenberg.
# Dying, or almost dying. Also dyeing.
# Being in a gothic band.
# Denying being a goth.
# Going to [[Convergence]] or the [[Whitby Gothic Weekend]].
# Being, or looking like, a bat or a spider.

Unfortunately, the deliberate process of trying to accrue goth points can easily lead to being [[sp00ky]]. This approach is therefore not recommended. It should be noted that people who have no goth points still have the potential to be goth-compatible.

Alt.gothic.fashion is a splinter group of [[alt.gothic]] and has caused much consternation because of it. Some people on alt.gothic did not want to read fashion-related posts and were happy to shunt such threads in the direction of a.g.f. However, with the explosion of the alt* hierarchy, some systems have stopped adding new alt* groups, so the access to a.g.f is far from universal. Thus, some fashion topics wander over to alt.gothic by mistake, but it can't be helped.

So for those who can find it, alt.gothic.fashion is here for you to discuss all aspects of gothic fashions and styles. In this newsgroup, the topic of 'gothic fashion' often includes clothing, makeup, hair dye, sewing, arts and crafts, home decor, historical clothing and weaponry, fetishes and fashion, what people are wearing, how people react to one's outfits, what makes people dress they way they do, what to wear to specific functions, how to get more out of one's gothic lifestyle, evolution of gothic styles, etc.

General gothic discussions also happen here, although anything not directly connected to gothic fashion should have "OT" (short for "off-topic") in the subject line of the post.

Aside from generally keeping to the topic, we have few set rules, not too much flaming, and a good beat so you can dance to it.

Netscrape

One of the hallowed traditions of [[alt.gothic]] is the Netscrape. Traditionally this was held in September, to catch the influx of clueless newbies who had just got net access at university. Later it came to be held once every six months, as that was the only way to keep up. Now it's back to once a year, appearing regularly in February.

Throughout most of its lifetime there has been a designated Keeper of the Netscrape. The first of these Keepers was Oddlystrange. In later years the Netscrape came to be looked after on a rather anarchic basis, with regulars being encouraged to post one when they felt like it. This system led to several disputes when competing versions were published simultaneously, and when various people said that other people's Netscrapes were stupid, so it was eventually abandoned. The current Keeper of the Netscrape is [[Jennie Kermode]].

The Netscrape is essentially a list of questions for alt.gothic posters to answer. One doesn't need to be established to do so - people are encouraged to use it to delurk. Even when Netscrapes are standardised, questions vary between each edition, though some things (like name, age, and duration of posting habit) remain constant. There are usually questions about personal identity, relationships, internet use, occupation, hobbies and [[Alt.gothic Controversies]]. It has been rumoured that the information gathered in the Netscrape is recorded and used by the C*b*l for its own nefarious purposes. Nevertheless, most regulars are keen to participate and recent years have seen Netscrapes exported to LiveJournal.
